Qui tam statistics, 1986-2004

Qui tam lawsuits brought under the False Claims Act for fraud against the federal government have returned more than $8.4 billion to the government since Congress amended the False Claims Act in 1986, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Roughly one-fourth of the qui tam recoveries are due to whistleblower cases brought by Phillips & Cohen LLP and its attorneys.

Recoveries resulting from all qui tam and non-qui tam cases brought under the False Claims Act from 1986 to 2004 total $13.5 billion. Whistleblower rewards for qui tam cases exceed $1.4 billion.

In fiscal year 2004, qui tam lawsuits resulted in recoveries of $554 million. Whistleblowers received rewards that totaled $108 million.
